Orthodontics

At Chelsea Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, orthodontic evaluation is provided at the initial exam and every routine exam thereafter. The growth and development of your child is taken very seriously. Science and experience tell us that the simplest corrections at a young age go a very long way to minimizing and simplifying future orthodontic needs. Should orthodontic intervention be in your child's best interest, our pediatric dentists will inform you of the concern and then manage it on their own or recommend your child for an orthodontic evaluation with an orthodontist.

When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends your child receive an initial orthodontic evaluation at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. Fortunately, pediatric dentists are trained in evaluating the growth and the development of your child and can anticipate your child's readiness to receive an orthodontic consultation. Therefore, at Chelsea Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, an orthodontic evaluation is provided at every routine visit. For this reason, most of our patients can wait until the start of their permanent dentition, age 11 to 12, before being referred for orthodontic treatment.

What are the benefits of orthodontics?
Braces not only straighten teeth but they improve your bite and overall, improve how you feel about yourself. A malocclusion (bad bite) can affect the way you may smile, chew your food, clean your teeth, and can affect your self esteem. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease, and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one's appearance. The doctors and staff at Chelsea Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics can discuss the specific benefits of orthodontics for your child at his or her appointment.

How will I know if my child needs braces?
As part of your child's routine dental check-ups, the pediatric dentists of Chelsea Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics will evaluate the growth and development of your child clinically and with appropriate x-rays. The information obtained from those visits will help form a decision on your child's orthodontic needs. Below are a few examples of what a pediatric dentist or orthodontist looks for in establishing the need for orthodontic intervention or treatment for your child:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Sucking the thumb or fingers, or other oral habits
  • Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth
  • Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude or are recessed
  • Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
  • Protruding teeth
  • Teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don't meet at all
  • Facial imbalance or asymmetry (features out of proportion to the rest of the face)
